Teikoku Oil is founded as a semigovernmental company in accordance with the Teikoku Oil Law to unify the existing Japanese oil exploration companies at the time.
1950
Teikoku Oil becomes a private company.
1962
Japan's first long-distance natural gas pipeline between Tokyo and Niigata Prefecture (Tokyo Line, 310 kilometers) is completed.

1975
Commercial production through a subsidiary Teikoku Oil (D.R. Congo) Co., Ltd. begins offshore in the D.R.Congo. This is the company's first overseas oil development project.
1979
The Minami Nagaoka Gas Field with Japan's largest reserve of natural gas is discovered in Niigata Prefecture.
1984
Production at Minami Nagaoka Gas Field begins with completion of Koshijihara Gas Plant.
1992
Teikoku Oil (Venezuela) Co., Ltd. is established. The Company is the first Japanese corporation to participate in the oil development project in Venezuela.

2002
Matsumoto Line and Iruma Line are completed.
2005
- Drilling rights in the East China Sea are granted.
- Teikoku Oil makes successful bids for two oil exploration blocks in the Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, at the Bid Round II.
Through this integration INPEX Holdings establishes an operating base with strong international competitiveness to stand on an equal footing with other global oil companies and will realize a more stable supply of oil and natural gas.
2006
- The Australian Government grants Major Project Facilitation (MPF) status to Ichthys Project located in north-west Australia.
- Shizuoka Line and Minamifuji Line are completed in Japan.
- Acquisition of the Area 113-3/4 in the Bid Round 3 for an Exploration and Production Sharing Agreement, the Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya.
2007
Studies are commenced toward constructing an LNG import terminal in Niigata Prefecture, Japan.
2008
Through merger with INPEX and Teikoku Oil, INPEX Holdings changes its name to INPEX CORPORATION and becomes an operating holding company to ensure a more effective and flexible management structure. Company headquarters move to Akasaka, Tokyo.
