We are promoting CSR management from a medium- to- long-term perspective and on a global basis in pursuit for further growth of our business. To promote this kind of management, we are striving to conduct CSR activities while engaging in stakeholder communication, and are also actively disclosing information. This section describes the evaluation of our activities by external stakeholders.

External Evaluation of INPEX CSR Activities

Dow Jones Sustainability World Index

In 2016, we have been listed on the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World), an index that exemplifies socially responsible investing (SRI*1).

DJSI is a leading name in SRI stock indexes, which is produced by Dow Jones Inc., a major provider of financial information services in the U.S. and RobecoSAM, a Swiss investment management advisory service that focuses exclusively on sustainability investing. The SRI index is composed by selecting and evaluating investable companies from around the world from a sustainability viewpoint based on the three areas: economy, environment, and society.

*1 SRI is an investment decision by individuals or institutional investors who consider not only financial performance but also CSR performance such as corporate governance, the environment and society.



FTSE Russell confirms that INPEX has satisfied the requirements to become a constituent of the FTSE4Good Index Series. We are the member of the FTSE4Good Global and Japan Index, an equity index series that is designed to facilitate investment in companies that meet globally recognised corporate responsibility standards. Companies in the FTSE4Good Index Series have met stringent environmental, social and governance criteria, and are positioned to capitalise on the benefits of responsible business practice.



MSCI Global Sustainability Indexes, SRI Indexes

INPEX are constituent of the MSCI Global Sustainability Indexes and the MSCI Global SRI Indexes, a leading set of indexes in the selection of outstanding companies in ESG developed by Morgan Stanley Capital Investment (MSCI). The U.S. MSCI indexes cover 70 industry sectors and 5,700 companies from around the world, broken down by such factors as sector, region, and investment theme.  These two indexes consist of large and midcap companies across 23 Developed Markets and 23 Emerging Markets countires. 



ECPI Ethical Index Global

We were selected by ECPI for inclusion in their SRI Index. ECPI is an investment management advisory firm specializing in sustainable investment with offices in Luxemburg and Milan. To enable institutional investors and banks to incorporate factors related to ESG into their investment decision process through the provision of ESG ratings and index advisory services, ECPI also maintains industry sector, regional, and theme-based indices composed of companies from around the world, which achieve a certain level in CSR performance standards.

INPEX has been rated highly in ESG for its information disclosure and included in the following ECPI indexes as of January 2017.

Selection Index Special features
ECPI Global Carbon Equity Outstanding companies in infrastructure, materials production, energy and related areas who are engaged in CO2 emissions reduction are selected as index components.
ECPI Global Megatrend Equity Companies addressing long-term and strategic challenges involving global megatrends such as resource exhaustion, climate change, and population are selected as index components.
ECPI World ESG Equity Companies in developed market that satisfies ECPI ESG criteria are selected as index components.


2016 Channel NewsAsia Sustainability Ranking

INPEX has been rated 16th out of the 100 most sustainable companies in Asia in the 2016 Channel NewsAsia Sustainability Ranking. Companies in the Ranking are selected based on research provided by research partner Sustainalytics using an ESG framework. Together with knowledge partner CSR Asia, the Channel NewsAsia Sustainability Ranking provides businesses and their stakeholders a benchmark to measure themselves against other regional businesses.

INPEX  achieved a rating of A- in the CDP*2 Climate Change Report 2016.

In 2013 and 2014, INPEX was selected for inclusion in the CDP Climate Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI) as a company demonstrating excellent climate change disclosure practices.


*2   CDP is a leading international non-governmental organization that seeks to achieve a systematic change in market behavior to face the challenges of climate change, water scarcity and deforestation through a global disclosure system enabling companies, cities, states and regions to measure and manage their environmental impact. CDP works with 827 institutional investors with US$100 trillion in assets to engage companies and public entities to disclose data on their environmental performances through questionnaires that are considered to be among the most influential of their kind. CDP then transforms the data into a detailed analysis on environmental risks, opportunities and impacts to allow investors, businesses and policymakers to make better-informed decisions.


The Morningstar Socially Responsible Investment Index (MS-SRI)

We have been selected as a component of the "Morningstar Socially Responsible Investment Index" (MS-SRI) since 2013. Morningstar Japan K.K. selects 150 publicly listed companies through assessments of social responsibility and forms an index based on their stock prices as the first SRI index in Japan.
